GAIN — Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition
Public-private partnership founded in 2002 in the framework of the UN Special Session on Children. Coordinates large-scale food fortification programs, in-market approaches to nutrient adequacy in low- and middle-income countries, and public-private financing instruments for nutritional interventions.
Why it matters here
GAIN operates on a specific answer to the question of nutritional adequacy: population-level fortification of staple foods with a limited set of micronutrients, negotiated with food manufacturers. It is one of the few institutional actors that treats micronutrient status as an object of intervention at all. Its work is nevertheless calibrated to a different definition of the problem than the one this resource proposes: the resource asks what the individual physiological requirement is, GAIN asks what the manufacturer can be brought to add.
