Katherine L. Tucker

Distinguished University Professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and director of its Center for Population Health. Principal investigator of the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study, a longitudinal cohort in which the epidemiology of vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D and homocysteine has been studied over decades in a population that would be nearly invisible in the typical NHANES cross-section.

Why she matters here

Tucker’s cohort work makes visible what the routine clinical panel obscures: that populations with normal biochemistry on paper are, in fact, chronically depleted on more sensitive markers, and that this depletion tracks with the outcomes the routine panel is supposed to forecast. It is directly relevant to what this resource develops on the epistemology of tests and reference ranges.
