People’s Health Movement

International civil-society network founded in 2000 at the First People’s Health Assembly in Bangladesh. Publishes the Global Health Watch series (an alternative to the WHO’s World Health Report), coordinates People’s Health Assemblies, and advocates for the political and economic determinants of health at the WHO and in national settings.

Why it matters here

PHM is the closest civil-society counterpart, at the international level, to the framing this resource proposes: it insists on the political and structural determination of health, rather than on the biomedical management of individual risk. The two framings converge on the diagnosis and diverge on the object. PHM’s object is the health system; this resource’s object is the physiological status the health system has failed to protect. The two are complementary if the difference is kept explicit.
