Taurine, an amino acid the body synthesizes but not in adequate amounts under all conditions, extended average lifespan by 10 to 12% in mice and improved multiple healthspan markers in monkeys, in a study published in Science in 2023. For the mice, that meant three to four extra months, equivalent to about seven or eight human years. The intervention was oral supplementation of an amino acid that costs pennies per day.
The claim, in the reference of interventional geroscience
Vijay Yadav at Columbia University led an international team whose 2023 paper in Science is the most-cited recent work on a nutritional-intervention geroprotector. The paper’s central finding is straightforward:
“Taurine supplementation increased health span and lifespan in mice and health span in monkeys, and mechanistically, taurine reduced cellular senescence, protected against telomerase deficiency, suppressed mitochondrial dysfunction, decreased DNA damage, and attenuated inflammaging.”

The specific numbers: +12% average lifespan in female mice, +10% in male mice, starting supplementation at 14 months of age. The mechanistic list (senescence, telomeres, mitochondria, DNA damage, inflammaging) covers most of the recognized hallmarks of aging.
The honest caveat
In 2025, a National Institute on Aging analysis challenged the human biomarker claim: in the NIA cohort, blood taurine did not consistently fall with age (it rose or stayed flat), which weakens the argument that low taurine is a marker of the aging state in humans. The animal intervention data are not affected by this. That taurine supplementation improves survival and healthspan in mice and healthspan in monkeys stands. Whether declining taurine is a driver of human aging, or whether taurine supplementation extends human lifespan, are separate questions the field has not resolved.
What is not measured, and what is not asked
Taurine is not part of any standard laboratory panel. Physicians do not ask patients about their taurine intake. Sarcopenic older adults, patients on chronic dialysis, patients with heart failure, and vegans (whose taurine intake is essentially zero from diet) are not screened for taurine status. The 2023 finding did not change the standard geriatric assessment. Taurine remains a supplement-shelf molecule, indexed on its performance in energy drinks rather than on its performance in Science.
