Case Report: Vitamin D Deficiency

Context: A person living in a northern region presents symptoms of fatigue, bone pain, and depressive mood in winter. A blood test reveals a vitamin D level below 20 ng/mL — well below the recommended threshold.

Problem: The physician recommends sun exposure and an enriched diet, but does not prescribe supplementation, considering the deficiency not severe enough. In winter, sun exposure is impossible in this region, and diet alone cannot correct the deficiency.

Physiological rights analysis: The right to an adequate vitamin D level is a fundamental physiological right. The absence of accessible, reimbursed supplementation in a context where natural means are insufficient constitutes a violation of this right.

Consequences: The individual continues to suffer from chronic fatigue and pain, increasing the risk of developing more serious conditions (osteoporosis, autoimmune disorders, depression).

Proposed solution: Physiological rights recommend systematic access to vitamin D supplementation in low-sunlight regions, along with public reimbursement to guarantee equal access.
